What is a Pyrene?

Pyrene is a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) composed of four fused benzene rings, with the chemical formula C₁₆H₁₀. It is commonly formed during the incomplete combustion of organic materials such as wood, coal, and petroleum, and can be found in smoke and exhaust gases. Pyrene is known for its strong fluorescence, emitting a blue-white glow when exposed to ultraviolet light. This property makes it useful as a fluorescent probe in biochemical applications and molecular research, especially in the study of molecular interactions and electron transport.

However, pyrene is also recognized as an environmental pollutant. It poses toxic and potentially carcinogenic risks to living organisms, necessitating careful handling and regulation.
