What is a Pyrrolidine?
Pyrrolidine is a saturated five-membered heterocyclic compound composed of four carbon atoms and one nitrogen atom, with the chemical formula C₄H₉N. It is the fully hydrogenated form of pyrrole, meaning it lacks aromaticity and is therefore more chemically reactive. It is a colorless, volatile liquid with a strong, ammonia-like odor and is highly soluble in water. Pyrrolidine is basic and reacts readily with other chemicals, making it useful as an intermediate in organic synthesis and in the production of pharmaceuticals. Many natural alkaloids and drugs contain the pyrrolidine ring in their molecular structure.
Its derivatives are also used in neurotransmitters, agrochemicals, and as monomers in polymer synthesis.
