What is a Gallium arsenide (GaAs)?
Gallium arsenide (GaAs) is a compound composed of gallium (Ga) and arsenic (As), with the chemical formula GaAs. It is primarily used as a semiconductor material and plays a crucial role in high-performance electronic devices. Due to the chemical bonding between gallium and arsenic, gallium arsenide has a higher electron mobility compared to silicon (Si), enabling the creation of high-speed and efficient electronic devices. Gallium arsenide is commonly used in high-frequency and high-speed communication technologies, such as mobile phones, satellite communication, and GPS, as well as in optical communication, infrared technologies, and laser sources. It is also used in solar cells and LEDs (light-emitting diodes).
However, gallium arsenide is toxic, and proper care must be taken when handling it. Specifically, arsenic components may pose harmful effects on the environment and human health during production or disposal, necessitating safety precautions.
