What is a Phenylenediamine?
Phenylenediamine is an aromatic amine with the chemical formula C₆H₄(NH₂)₂. It consists of a benzene ring substituted with two amino groups (–NH₂). There are three isomers of phenylenediamine: 1,2-phenylenediamine (ortho), 1,3-phenylenediamine (meta), and 1,4-phenylenediamine (para). This compound is widely used as a precursor in the manufacture of dyes, especially oxidative hair dyes. It is also used in the production of polymers, as a rubber antioxidant, and in photographic developers. Para-phenylenediamine (PPD) is particularly common in hair dye products.
However, phenylenediamine can cause allergic reactions, including skin irritation and sensitization. Contact dermatitis has been reported in occupational settings and among consumers using hair dyes. Due to its potential health effects, its use is regulated in many countries, such as in the European Union.
