What is a Phenol?
Phenol is an aromatic compound with the chemical formula C₆H₅OH, consisting of a hydroxyl group (–OH) bonded directly to a benzene ring. It appears as a colorless to pale pink crystalline solid at room temperature and has a distinctive, sharp odor. Phenol was once widely used as an antiseptic and disinfectant, but due to its toxicity and the development of safer alternatives, its medical use has declined. Today, it is primarily used as an important industrial raw material in the production of plastics (especially phenolic resins), synthetic fibers, pharmaceuticals, and pesticides.
Phenol is corrosive and can cause burns upon contact with the skin or mucous membranes. It is slightly soluble in water but dissolves readily in alkaline solutions.
