What is a Phenolphthalein?
Phenolphthalein is an organic compound with the chemical formula C₂₀H₁₄O₄. It appears as a white or colorless crystalline solid, soluble in alcohol and weak alkali, but nearly insoluble in water. It is best known as a pH indicator: colorless in acidic to neutral solutions (pH < 8.2), and pink to fuchsia in basic conditions (pH 8.2–10.0). This property makes it widely used in acid-base titrations in laboratories. Previously, phenolphthalein was also used as a laxative, but due to safety concerns over long-term use, its medicinal use has been restricted or banned in several countries.
Because of its sharp color change and ease of use, phenolphthalein is common in chemistry education and analytical testing.
