What is a Butadiene?
Butadiene, with the chemical formula C₄H₆, is an unsaturated hydrocarbon, most commonly referred to as 1,3-butadiene. It has two double bonds located at the 1st and 3rd carbon atoms, forming a conjugated diene, which makes it highly reactive in chemical processes. It is a colorless gas at room temperature with a mild, gasoline-like odor and is primarily obtained as a by-product of petroleum refining. The most significant use of butadiene is in the production of synthetic rubber, especially styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) and polybutadiene rubber, which are essential materials for tires, belts, and other automotive components. It is also used in the manufacture of plastics (such as ABS), latex, and coatings.
Butadiene is volatile and can pose health risks through inhalation, especially with long-term exposure, as it is considered a carcinogen. Proper ventilation and personal protective equipment are important during handling.
