What is a Magnesium Fluoride (MgF₂)?

Magnesium fluoride is an inorganic compound composed of magnesium and fluorine, with the chemical formula MgF₂. It appears as a colorless, transparent crystal that is hard, durable, and chemically stable. Due to its excellent transmission of light across a wide spectrum—from ultraviolet to infrared—magnesium fluoride is widely used in optical applications. Its high UV transmission makes it ideal for use in high-precision optical components such as microscope lenses, telescopes, cameras, and laser systems. It is also commonly used in anti-reflective coatings and specialized optical filters.
