What is a Lithium Fluoride (LiF)?

Lithium fluoride is an inorganic compound composed of lithium and fluorine, with the chemical formula LiF. It forms colorless, hard crystals with a high melting point (around 845°C) and excellent chemical stability. Known for its wide optical transparency range, LiF transmits light effectively from the deep ultraviolet (DUV) to the infrared region, making it highly suitable for optical lenses, prisms, and window materials. It is particularly valued in the semiconductor and laser industries for its deep UV performance.

LiF also exhibits high resistance to radiation, which allows it to be used in scintillators for X-ray and gamma-ray detection, as well as neutron detectors. Additionally, it has thermoluminescent properties, making it a reliable material for personal dosimeters and radiation monitoring devices. Chemically stable and largely insoluble in water and most acids, LiF is safe for long-term storage. However, it can be hazardous if inhaled as dust or ingested in large amounts, so appropriate handling procedures are essential.
