What is a Silver Fluoride (AgF)?
Silver fluoride is an inorganic compound composed of silver (Ag) and fluorine (F), with the most commonly known form being silver(I) fluoride (AgF). It appears as a white or pale yellow crystalline solid that is highly soluble in water and exhibits slight acidity due to hydrolysis. While relatively stable, AgF decomposes when exposed to heat, moisture, or light, so it should be stored in tightly sealed containers. In organic synthesis, AgF is used as a fluorinating agent, playing a key role in introducing fluorine atoms into organic molecules. Additionally, due to the properties of silver and fluoride ions, it finds use in selective catalytic reactions and the development of advanced materials.
Silver fluoride is potentially irritating to the skin and mucous membranes, and exposure via inhalation or ingestion can be harmful. Proper safety measures, including gloves and masks, should be taken during handling.
