What is a Protoporphyrin?

Protoporphyrin is a type of porphyrin compound and an important intermediate in the synthesis of heme (hemoglobin) and chlorophyll (the pigment involved in photosynthesis). Its molecular formula is C₁₉H₁₉N₄O₃, and it has a cyclic structure. The compound consists of four pyrrole rings (five-membered rings containing nitrogen atoms) that are connected to form a porphyrin framework, with the ability to coordinate metal ions at its center. Protoporphyrin plays a biologically significant role, particularly as a precursor to heme. Heme is a component of hemoglobin, the protein responsible for oxygen transport in red blood cells.
