What is a Propylene (Propene)?

Propylene (chemical formula C₃H₆), also known as propene, is an unsaturated hydrocarbon classified as an alkene. It is composed of three carbon atoms and six hydrogen atoms. At room temperature, it is a colorless, flammable gas with a slightly sweet odor. Propylene is primarily produced through petroleum refining and naphtha cracking processes. One of its most important uses is as a raw material for producing polypropylene. Polypropylene is lightweight, strong, and resistant to chemicals and heat, making it widely used in packaging, automotive parts, home appliances, and medical devices.

In addition, propylene is a key starting material for various chemical products such as acrylonitrile, propylene oxide, and isopropanol. These compounds are essential in the manufacturing of fibers, synthetic rubbers, solvents, and adhesives. Regarding safety, propylene can have mild anesthetic effects at high concentrations, so proper ventilation is necessary during use. It is also highly flammable and must be handled carefully near sources of ignition.
