What is a Pentene?
Pentenes are alkenes with the molecular formula C₅H₁₀, consisting of five carbon atoms and one double bond. Due to the position of the double bond, three main isomers exist: 1-pentene, cis-2-pentene, and trans-2-pentene. These compounds are colorless, flammable liquids with a characteristic odor. They are primarily used as intermediates in organic synthesis, precursors for polymers and plasticizers, and in the manufacture of pharmaceuticals and fragrances. Pentene is also a by-product in the cracking processes in petrochemical industries. Due to its volatility and flammability, proper storage and handling are required. Inhalation of high concentrations may cause eye and throat irritation, dizziness, or headaches.
