What is a Monoethanolamine (MEA)?
Monoethanolamine (MEA) is an organic compound that has both amine and alcohol functional groups, with the chemical formula C₂H₇NO. It is a colorless, viscous liquid with a mild ammonia-like odor and is highly soluble in water and alcohols. MEA is widely used in industrial and consumer products. It serves as a surfactant, pH regulator, and corrosion inhibitor in applications such as detergents, personal care products, pharmaceuticals, and gas treatment processes. MEA is particularly important in removing carbon dioxide (CO₂) and hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) from gas streams in gas purification. Due to its alkaline nature, it is also used to neutralize acidic substances. While MEA has relatively low toxicity, it can cause irritation to the skin and eyes and should be handled with care.
