What is a Ammonium molybdate?
Ammonium molybdate is a compound containing ammonium ions (NH₄⁺) and molybdate anions, typically with the formula (NH₄)₆Mo₇O₂₄·4H₂O. It appears as a white crystalline powder that is highly soluble in water. It is widely used in analytical chemistry for molybdenum detection, as a catalyst, pigment, corrosion inhibitor, and also as a colorant in glass and ceramics. It serves as a source of molybdenum for fertilizers, contributing to plant nutrition. Under acidic conditions, it reacts to form a blue complex (molybdenum blue), which is used for phosphate detection. Due to potential health risks through inhalation or ingestion, proper safety precautions and protective gear are required when handling.
