What is a Iodoform?
Iodoform (chemical formula: CHI₃) is a yellow crystalline solid with a strong, distinct odor. It is an organic compound where a methyl group (CH₃) is attached to an iodine atom, making it a halogenated compound. Iodoform has historically been used in various applications, such as in medical and pharmaceutical fields, as well as in chemical experiments. Historically, iodoform was widely used as a disinfectant for skin infections and wounds. Thanks to the antimicrobial properties of iodine, iodoform helped inhibit bacterial growth when applied to wounds. However, with the development of more effective and safer disinfectants, its use has declined.
Iodoform is also important in organic chemistry as a reagent in laboratory experiments. In particular, it is used in the iodoform reaction, where it reacts with ketones and aldehydes to form a yellow crystalline product. This reaction is used to detect specific functional groups and is a valuable method in organic analysis.
