What is a Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG)?
Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) is natural gas that has been cooled to a liquid form, primarily consisting of methane (CH₄). At standard temperature and pressure, natural gas is a gas, but cooling it reduces its volume by approximately 600 times, making it easier to store and transport. This property enables LNG to be efficiently transported to remote locations where pipelines may not reach.
The process of producing LNG involves cooling natural gas to -162°C to liquefy it. LNG is used as a fuel for residential, commercial, and industrial purposes, particularly in power plants and factories. It is considered an environmentally friendly energy source due to its low emissions of carbon dioxide and sulfur oxides compared to coal and oil. As a result, many countries are expanding their LNG infrastructure as part of global efforts to reduce carbon emissions.
