What is a Palladium chloride (PdCl₂)?
Palladium chloride (PdCl₂) is an inorganic compound composed of palladium and chlorine. It appears as a reddish-brown crystalline solid and is only slightly soluble in water, but dissolves in hydrochloric acid and chloride-containing solutions to form complexes. It is widely used as a catalyst in organic synthesis, particularly in cross-coupling reactions like the Stille and Suzuki reactions. It also plays a role in the production of automotive catalytic converters, electronics manufacturing, and as an intermediate in palladium metal refining. Due to its toxicity and potential to cause allergic reactions through inhalation or skin contact, proper safety measures must be taken during handling. As palladium is a rare and valuable metal, recycling and recovery processes are common in industrial applications.
