What is a Vinyl chloride (CH₂=CHCl)?

Vinyl chloride (CH₂=CHCl) is a colorless, flammable gas with a slightly sweet odor. It is an important industrial chemical primarily used to produce polyvinyl chloride (PVC), a widely used plastic found in construction materials (like pipes and window frames), electrical cable insulation, medical devices, clothing, and credit cards. Despite its utility, vinyl chloride is a known human carcinogen, particularly associated with a rare liver cancer called angiosarcoma. Due to these health risks, strict handling and storage regulations are enforced. It is also considered a volatile organic compound (VOC), contributing to air pollution. Inhalation is the main route of exposure, and long-term contact can damage the liver and nervous system.
