What is a Lithium chloride (LiCl)?
Lithium chloride (LiCl) is a white or colorless crystalline salt of lithium, known for its high hygroscopicity, meaning it readily absorbs moisture from the air. It dissolves easily in water and alcohol. Due to these properties, lithium chloride is used in desiccants and dehumidifiers. It is also important in industrial processes such as the production of lithium metal and as an electrolyte in lithium-ion batteries. In the past, it was used in medicine as a mood stabilizer, but its medical use is now limited due to toxicity concerns. It serves as a catalyst or additive in some chemical reactions and gives off a red color in flame tests. Proper handling is important, as excessive exposure can be harmful to health.
