What is a Hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂)?
Hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) is a chemical compound made up of hydrogen and oxygen atoms. It is a colorless liquid with a slightly sharp odor and is widely known for its strong oxidizing properties. Hydrogen peroxide is used as a disinfectant, bleaching agent, and in various chemical reactions. In healthcare, hydrogen peroxide is commonly used as a disinfectant for cleaning wounds and sanitizing surfaces. It is also used in the laundry industry as a bleaching agent to remove stains and whiten fabrics. Industrially, hydrogen peroxide is used for metal cleaning, pulp bleaching, and in some chemical synthesis processes.
While hydrogen peroxide is relatively stable under proper storage conditions, it is sensitive to light, heat, and metal ions, which can cause it to decompose into oxygen. This makes it necessary to store it in a cool, dry, and dark place, in a container with good ventilation. High concentrations of hydrogen peroxide are highly reactive and need to be handled with care. It can cause irritation or injury to the skin and eyes if mishandled, so safety precautions are essential.
