What is a Metal powder?
Metal powder refers to finely divided metals, produced through various methods such as mechanical grinding, atomization (spraying molten metal and rapidly cooling it), electrolysis, and chemical reduction. Metal powders are essential in a wide range of industries including automotive, electronics, aerospace, 3D printing, welding, coatings, and catalysis. Common types include iron, copper, aluminum, nickel, silver, and titanium powders. Each has specific applications—for instance, iron powder is used in sintered parts and magnetic materials, aluminum in paints and fireworks, and nickel in battery materials.
Due to their fine particle size and large surface area, metal powders are highly reactive and prone to oxidation. Some, like aluminum or magnesium powders, are highly flammable and can pose fire or explosion hazards. Proper handling and storage—such as keeping them in sealed containers away from moisture—is essential.
