What is a Phosphorus pentoxide (P₂O₅)?
Phosphorus pentoxide (P₂O₅) is a white, crystalline powder widely known as a powerful dehydrating agent. It strongly absorbs moisture from the air and reacts violently with water to form phosphoric acid (H₃PO₄) with significant heat release. It is primarily used in organic synthesis and pharmaceutical production as a dehydrating agent, and also serves as a drying agent and a reagent in laboratories. P₂O₅ is also an important precursor in producing other phosphorus compounds and solid acid catalysts.
Due to its high reactivity, proper personal protective equipment such as gloves and goggles must be used when handling it. Inhalation should be avoided, and good ventilation is necessary.
