What is a Molybdenum trioxide (MoO₃)?
Molybdenum trioxide (MoO₃) is a white to pale yellow crystalline powder and one of the most important molybdenum compounds. It is primarily produced by roasting molybdenite (MoS₂) ores in the presence of oxygen. MoO₃ is mainly used as a precursor for molybdenum metal and its alloys, which exhibit high strength and corrosion resistance at elevated temperatures—ideal for aerospace, power generation, and electronics. It is also widely used as a catalyst, particularly in petroleum desulfurization and oxidation reactions.
MoO₃ has growing applications in functional materials such as battery electrodes, gas sensors, electrochromic devices, and smart windows. Its layered structure and redox properties make it valuable in advanced technologies. Handling requires protective equipment to avoid inhalation or skin irritation. Under proper safety conditions, MoO₃ is stable and easy to manage.
