What is a Lithium oxide (Li₂O)?
Lithium oxide (Li₂O) is an inorganic compound composed of lithium and oxygen, appearing as a white crystalline solid. It is highly alkaline and reacts vigorously with water to form lithium hydroxide, releasing heat. This property makes it valuable in the glass and ceramics industry as a flux, improving meltability and clarity at high temperatures. It is also of interest in battery technology, where it can serve as a precursor or additive in cathode materials for lithium-ion batteries, potentially enhancing performance and stability. In addition, lithium oxide is being considered for use in nuclear fusion reactors as a source for tritium. Due to its reactivity with moisture, it must be stored in sealed, dry environments.
