What is a Zinc nitrate (Zn(NO₃)₂)?
Zinc nitrate (Zn(NO₃)₂) is an inorganic compound that typically exists as a colorless crystalline solid in its hexahydrate form (Zn(NO₃)₂·6H₂O). It is highly soluble in water and alcohol and is hygroscopic, requiring storage in tightly sealed containers. It is primarily used in laboratories and industry as a reagent, mordant in dyeing, catalyst precursor, and in the manufacturing of electronic materials and ceramics. It is also gaining interest as a precursor for nanomaterials.
Zinc nitrate is an oxidizing agent and may react with flammable materials, posing fire hazards. It can cause irritation to the eyes and skin and may be harmful if inhaled or ingested. Personal protective equipment such as gloves, goggles, and masks is recommended during handling. It is usually produced by reacting zinc metal with nitric acid. When heated, it decomposes to release toxic nitrogen oxides, requiring proper ventilation.
