What is a Boron nitride (BN)?

Boron nitride (BN) is a compound composed of boron and nitrogen, available in several structural forms, the most common being hexagonal (h-BN) and cubic (c-BN). Hexagonal boron nitride, often called “white graphite,” is known for its excellent lubricating properties, electrical insulation, and thermal resistance. It is widely used in lubricants, thermal interface materials, and insulation components. Cubic boron nitride, on the other hand, is second only to diamond in hardness and is utilized in cutting tools and abrasives. BN is chemically inert and remains stable at high temperatures, making it ideal for use in vacuum furnaces, high-temperature reactors, and electronic packaging. It also offers excellent thermal conductivity and electrical insulation, making it a valuable material for heat dissipation in electronic devices. Additionally, due to its biocompatibility, boron nitride is being explored for use in medical applications.
