What is a Chlorine Dioxide (ClO₂)?

Chlorine Dioxide (ClO₂) is a yellow-green gas with a distinct, pungent odor and powerful oxidizing properties. It is highly soluble in water and widely used as a disinfectant and sanitizer. Applications include disinfecting drinking water, cleaning food processing equipment, and sterilizing air in hospitals and public facilities. Compared to sodium hypochlorite, chlorine dioxide produces fewer harmful byproducts, such as trihalomethanes, making it a safer choice for disinfection. It is effective at low concentrations and exhibits strong antimicrobial activity against viruses, bacteria, and fungi. However, in its gaseous form, chlorine dioxide is unstable and can be explosive, so it must be handled with extreme care, especially at high concentrations. It is often generated on-site or used in stabilized form.
