What is a Uric acid?

Uric acid is a chemical compound produced in the body during the metabolism of purines. It is normally present in small amounts in the blood and is excreted through the kidneys in urine. However, when uric acid levels become elevated due to metabolic imbalance or impaired excretion, a condition called hyperuricemia may develop, which can lead to gout or kidney stones. Uric acid also functions as an antioxidant, particularly in the brain, where it may help protect nerve cells from oxidative stress. Its levels in the body can fluctuate based on diet, physical activity, alcohol consumption, and genetic predisposition. In health screenings, the normal reference range for adult males is approximately 3.6–7.0 mg/dL. Treatment for high uric acid typically includes dietary restrictions on purine-rich foods (such as liver, roe, and beer), and medications that either reduce uric acid production or increase its excretion. Beyond its medical significance, uric acid is also used in biochemical research and as a reagent in diagnostic testing.
