What is a Urea?

Urea is the final nitrogen-containing compound produced in the body during protein metabolism, primarily in the liver, where it is synthesized from ammonia. It is a colorless, odorless crystalline substance that is highly soluble in water. Urea is transported through the bloodstream to the kidneys and excreted in urine. It plays a critical role in detoxifying ammonia by converting it into a non-toxic form, and is a central component of the "urea cycle" (also known as the ornithine cycle). Industrially, urea is widely used as a nitrogen-rich fertilizer and is essential in modern agriculture. It is also found in pharmaceuticals, cosmetics (as a moisturizing agent), adhesives, and resins. In addition, urea plays an important role in environmental technology, particularly in reducing nitrogen oxide emissions from diesel engines via the urea SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) system.
