What is a Phthalic Anhydride?

Phthalic Anhydride is an organic compound with the chemical formula C₆H₄(CO)₂O, and is a key chemical in the industrial production of a wide range of products. It is produced by heating phthalic acid, which results in the removal of one molecule of water. Phthalic anhydride appears as a white crystalline powder and is widely used in the manufacturing of polyester resins, plasticizers, dyes, inks, pesticides, and pharmaceuticals.
