What is a Maleic Anhydride?

Maleic Anhydride is an organic compound with the chemical formula C₄H₂O₃, and it is the anhydride of maleic acid. It is produced by heating maleic acid, which results in the removal of one molecule of water. Maleic anhydride is a colorless or white crystalline substance with a high degree of reactivity and is widely used in various chemical processes. One of its most important applications is in the production of unsaturated polyester resins (UPR), which are used in automotive parts, building materials, and other applications. Additionally, maleic anhydride serves as a key raw material in the synthesis of phthalate esters, particularly for use as plasticizers. It also finds applications in the synthesis of agrochemicals, pharmaceuticals, surfactants, and dyes. While maleic anhydride is chemically stable, it is highly reactive and requires careful handling. It can cause irritation to the skin and eyes, so protective equipment should be worn during its handling.
