What is a Calcium Sulfide (CaS)?

Calcium Sulfide (CaS) is an inorganic compound composed of calcium and sulfur. It typically appears as a white or light yellow crystalline solid and is relatively insoluble in water. This compound is synthesized by reacting calcium metal with sulfur and is widely used in various chemical reactions. Calcium sulfide is highly prone to oxidation and readily reacts with air to form calcium sulfate (CaSO₄), so it requires careful handling and storage to prevent its degradation.

Calcium sulfide is used in a variety of industries. It plays a significant role in metal refining and the manufacturing of chemical products. Additionally, calcium sulfide is utilized in the production of optical materials and phosphors, especially in fluorescent lamps and fluorescent paints. These applications require high-temperature stability, which calcium sulfide provides. Furthermore, in agriculture, calcium sulfide is sometimes used as a soil amendment to help neutralize acidic soils.

Calcium sulfide also reacts with water to produce calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)₂) and hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) gas, making it sensitive to moisture. As such, precautions should be taken in environments with high humidity. When handling calcium sulfide, it is recommended to use protective gear and ensure proper ventilation. Due to its corrosive nature, extra care is required during handling and storage to avoid potential hazards.
