What is a Copper(II) sulfate (CuSO₄)?
Copper(II) sulfate (CuSO₄) is a blue crystalline compound composed of copper and sulfuric acid, with its pentahydrate form (CuSO₄·5H₂O) being particularly well-known for its vivid blue crystals. It is highly soluble in water and forms an acidic solution. In agriculture, it is used as a fungicide and algaecide (e.g., Bordeaux mixture), helping to prevent plant diseases. It also plays an essential role in chemical laboratories and analytical chemistry, such as in tests for reducing sugars (e.g., Benedict’s or Fehling’s solution). Additionally, copper sulfate is used in electroplating, copper refining, and as a mordant in textile and leather processing. Due to its toxicity, careful handling is required. It should be stored in a tightly sealed container away from moisture and light to maintain its stability.
