What is a Sulfur hexafluoride (SF₆)?
Sulfur hexafluoride (SF₆) is a colorless, odorless, non-flammable gas composed of one sulfur atom and six fluorine atoms. It is extremely chemically stable and possesses excellent electrical insulation and arc-quenching properties, making it widely used as an insulating gas in high-voltage electrical equipment such as substations, circuit breakers, and disconnectors. Due to its very long atmospheric lifetime and potent greenhouse effect, SF₆ is recognized as a significant contributor to global warming, prompting efforts to reduce its usage and promote recovery and recycling. Though it has extremely low toxicity and is non-reactive under normal conditions, it can pose an asphyxiation risk in confined spaces due to oxygen displacement, so proper ventilation and safety measures are necessary. It is also utilized in cooling systems and as a medium in certain types of gas lasers.
