What is a POE (Power over Ethernet)?
A POE (Power over Ethernet) injector is a device that allows both data and electrical power to be transmitted over an Ethernet cable. It is typically used to supply power to network devices that do not have built-in power capabilities, such as IP cameras, VoIP phones, and wireless access points. By using a POE injector, you can install these devices without needing an additional power adapter, simplifying the setup and reducing installation costs.
A POE injector works by utilizing two pairs of wires in the Ethernet cable for data transmission and the other two pairs for power delivery. The power is supplied according to the IEEE 802.3af (up to 15.4W) or IEEE 802.3at (up to 25.5W) standards, depending on the device's power requirements. Typically, the POE injector takes AC (alternating current) power as input and converts it into DC (direct current) to supply the necessary power to the connected device.
One of the main advantages of using a POE injector is the simplification of the wiring. Since both power and data are transmitted through a single Ethernet cable, there is no need to run a separate power line, reducing the complexity and cost of installation. This makes POE injectors particularly useful for installations of devices such as wireless access points and surveillance cameras, where power outlets may not be readily available. POE injectors can be used in combination with POE-enabled switches, but they are especially valuable when network devices are not POE-capable. In such cases, the POE injector can provide the necessary power to enhance the efficiency of communication and ensure the device operates correctly.
