What is a Nickel-Metal Hydride (NiMH) battery?
Nickel-Metal Hydride (NiMH) battery is a type of rechargeable battery that uses nickel (Ni) and hydrogen (H) as the materials for its electrodes. It is widely used in portable devices, power tools, and hybrid vehicles, and serves as an environmentally friendly and improved alternative to the Nickel-Cadmium (NiCd) battery. Key characteristics of NiMH batteries include high energy density and being environmentally friendly. Unlike NiCd batteries, NiMH batteries have a much lower memory effect, meaning they do not suffer as much capacity loss when charged before being fully discharged. Moreover, NiMH batteries do not contain cadmium (Cd), a toxic material, making them more environmentally friendly.
Advantages:
✅ High energy density and long lifespan
✅ Reduced memory effect
✅ Environmentally friendly (cadmium-free)
Disadvantages:
✅ Susceptible to high temperatures and overcharging, and may lose performance if deeply discharged
✅ Relatively more expensive
NiMH batteries are widely used in hybrid vehicles, home energy storage systems, and electronic devices. They are considered one of the most promising battery technologies alongside lithium-ion batteries for future applications.
