What is a Lithium-ion battery?
A lithium-ion battery is a type of rechargeable battery (secondary battery) that operates by the movement of lithium ions (Li⁺) between electrodes during charging and discharging. Known for its high energy density, lightweight, compact size, and low self-discharge rate, it is widely used in smartphones, laptops, electric vehicles (EVs), drones, and solar storage systems. The battery typically uses lithium compounds for the cathode and graphite for the anode, with lithium ions traveling through an electrolyte to generate electric current. It offers longer cycle life and higher capacity per weight compared to lead-acid or nickel-cadmium batteries.
However, there are risks of overheating or fire due to overcharging or operation in high temperatures, so safety circuits and thermal management are essential. Ongoing advancements aim to improve both safety and performance.
