What is a Lithium batteries?
Lithium batteries are a class of batteries that use lithium or lithium compounds as electrode materials. They are broadly categorized into two types: primary (non-rechargeable) and secondary (rechargeable). Primary lithium batteries, such as coin cells used in cameras and watches, offer high energy density and long shelf life. Secondary lithium batteries include lithium-ion and lithium polymer batteries, commonly found in smartphones, electric vehicles, power tools, and medical devices due to their lightweight and rechargeable nature.
Lithium is a light metal with a high electrochemical potential, allowing the creation of compact batteries with high output. However, they must be managed carefully as they pose fire risks if overcharged, damaged, or exposed to high temperatures. Safety mechanisms and proper recycling efforts are essential in their design and usage.
