What is a Linear power supply?
A linear power supply is a type of power supply that uses a transformer, rectifier, and a linear voltage regulator to convert and stabilize AC input into a smooth DC output. The process typically involves stepping down the AC voltage with a transformer, rectifying and filtering it, and then regulating it with a linear regulator to maintain a constant DC voltage. Unlike switching power supplies, linear power supplies do not use high-frequency switching components, resulting in very low output noise and ripple. This makes them ideal for sensitive applications such as audio systems, medical devices, and precision measurement instruments where noise must be minimized.
However, linear power supplies are less energy-efficient, as excess voltage is dissipated as heat. Thus, thermal management is essential. Their simple structure, high reliability, and clean output make them still valuable in many high-performance applications.
