What is a Hydroelectric turbine?
A hydroelectric turbine is a device that converts the mechanical energy of flowing water into electrical energy. It is a key component of hydroelectric power generation, one of the oldest forms of renewable energy, commonly used in areas with strong water currents. The turbine converts the energy from flowing water into rotational motion, which is then transferred to a generator to produce electricity.
There are primarily three types of hydroelectric turbines:
✅ Dam-based turbines:
These turbines use water stored in a dam, releasing it to generate power as it flows through the turbine.
✅ River-based turbines:
These turbines rely on the natural flow of rivers to generate power.
✅ Pumped-storage turbines:
These systems store energy during the day by pumping water to higher elevations, then release it to generate power at night (pumped-storage hydropower).
These turbines efficiently harness the energy of water to provide stable and reliable electricity generation.
