What is a Pre-filter?

A prefilter is a relatively coarse filter used in the upstream process of air or liquid filtration. Pre-filters are also used to filter liquids, but they generally refer to air filters that remove contaminants from the atmosphere. Normally, when removing contaminants such as dust and dirt, high-performance filters and pre-filters are used, contributing to longer filter life and efficiency. For these reasons, pre-filters are relatively inexpensive and available in various materials. Pre-filters are used to remove contaminants in the atmosphere and purify the air. However, the pre-filter is not used alone, but is used in combination with a high-performance HEPA filter with a smaller pore size than the pre-filter. This is one way to extend the life of expensive filters that capture micron-sized particles and dust. The minimum particle size that a general pre-filter can capture is about 5 μm.
