What is a Membrane filter?
A membrane filter is a filter used to remove fine particles in a solution. Filtration using a membrane filter, also called microfiltration, reliably removes particles larger than the pore size of the filter. However, membrane filters are prone to clogging, so coarse filtration using a pre-filter is often performed before filtration. Membrane filters are made from a wide variety of materials, including PTFE, PVDF, PES, cellulose mixed esters, and polypropylene. When using a membrane filter, it is necessary to select an appropriate membrane filter based on factors such as the chemical resistance of the filter medium, whether or not the components contained in the sample will adsorb to the filter material, and whether the pore size of the filter is small for the fine particles to be removed.
