What is a Gland packing?

Gland packing is a sealing material that is wrapped around the outer surface of a rotating or reciprocating shaft to seal the inside and outside of a machine or device. It is used for shaft sealing of shaft penetrating parts of machines and equipment. Gland packing does not completely seal the shaft, and it is accompanied by some leakage, so be careful. However, in some cases, such as pumps, a leak between the shaft and the gland packing is required for lubrication and cooling of the gland packing.
