What is a safety valve?

A safety valve is attached to a tank that holds a large amount of pressure, or to the outlet of a positive displacement compressor such as a reciprocating compressor. The safety valve automatically opens the internal valve to release the process pressure when abnormally high pressure is generated in the process and it is likely to exceed the design pressure of the tank, or before the compressor is about to break. This keeps the process safe. Therefore, it is used in many factories and chemical plants.
