What is a Creep tester?
A creep tester is a testing machine used to evaluate the creep characteristics of materials. Creep refers to the phenomenon in which a material deforms over time when a constant stress (load) is applied to the material for a long period of time. This phenomenon is particularly evident in high-temperature environments, so creep tests are important for evaluating materials used at high temperatures.
Purpose of creep test
Material selection: Creep characteristics are an important indicator when selecting materials to be used in high-temperature environments.
Life prediction: By examining creep characteristics, the risk of deformation or breakage of materials during long-term use can be predicted.
Design support: By considering creep characteristics in the design of structures and parts, more reliable designs can be achieved.
Creep test method
In creep tests, a test piece (sample) is left for a long time while maintaining a constant temperature under a constant stress, and the deformation that occurs during that time is measured. The test results are expressed as a creep curve that shows the relationship between the amount of deformation and time.
Configuration of creep tester
Loading device: A device for applying a constant stress to a test piece. The load is usually applied using weights or hydraulic systems.
High-temperature furnace: A furnace for keeping the test specimen at a specified temperature. The test temperature is adjusted according to the material and application.
Displacement measuring device: A device for accurately measuring the deformation of the test specimen. LVDTs (linear variable differential transformers) and tensile meters are used.
Control and data acquisition system: A system for controlling the entire test and collecting and recording the measurement data. It is common to monitor and analyze the data in real time using a computer.
Creep testing is one of the essential tests for evaluating materials used in high-temperature environments, especially in power plants, aerospace, and chemical plants. This ensures the long-term reliability of materials and supports safe and efficient operation.
