What is a AE sensor?
An AE sensor is a type of vibration sensor, and is a device that detects specific vibrations (AE waves). AE is an abbreviation for Acoustic Emission, and refers to the phenomenon in which sound is emitted as elastic waves when a part of an object is deformed or damaged, or when an impact is applied. An AE sensor is used to detect this phenomenon. AE waves are caused by minute degradation that occurs long before the object completely breaks down. Therefore, while commonly used vibration sensors detect when an object is damaged, AE sensors can detect the early stages of deterioration of an object. Taking advantage of this feature, AE sensors are used for predictive maintenance of industrial equipment and quality control of products.
Application of AE sensor
AE sensors are used in various applications such as product quality control and safety control. In addition, there are narrow band types that react strongly in a specific narrow frequency band and wide band types that react in a wide frequency band, and they can be used properly depending on the application. Narrow-band AE sensors are used for predictive maintenance of motor deterioration and detection of metal welding defects such as pipes. By using a narrow band type AE sensor, it is possible to detect the AE wave that is generated only when an abnormality occurs without responding to the vibration of the motor operating normally or the vibration caused by welding. Broadband AE sensors are used to detect foreign objects inside products and to detect signs of landslides on the ground. By using a broadband AE sensor, it is possible to detect when tiny pieces of solder fall from the unit board inside the product, or minute vibrations that are signs of landslides in the ground.
