What is a RTD?
RTD stands for Resistance Temperature Detector. A type of temperature sensor, also called a resistance temperature detector. An RTD is a temperature sensor that utilizes the property that the electrical resistance of metals increases as the temperature rises, and detects temperature by measuring the electrical resistance of metals. Metals such as platinum, nickel, and copper, which have a large temperature coefficient of electrical resistance and good linearity, are used for the RTD element, which is the temperature detection part of the RTD. Because the relationship between metal resistance and temperature is precisely known, RTDs are capable of accurate temperature measurements.
