What is a Real time clock?
A Real-Time Clock (RTC) is an electronic circuit or IC designed to keep track of time accurately and provide the current date and time to systems and devices. RTCs typically have a built-in battery that allows them to continue keeping time even when the power is turned off, making them essential for computers, home appliances, and embedded systems. An RTC typically keeps track of the time in units such as year, month, day, hour, minute, and second, and may also include features like timers and alarms. RTCs are used in applications where accurate timekeeping is required, or where time needs to be recorded even when the device is powered off.
Application of Real time clock
1.Computer BIOS The computer's BIOS (Basic Input Output System) uses an RTC to set the date and time when the system starts up. Even when the power is off, the RTC continues to function with a battery, ensuring that the correct time is maintained when the system is turned back on.
2.Household Appliances Certain home appliances like microwave ovens, refrigerators, and washing machines use RTCs to start operations based on a set time. This allows users to schedule tasks, making everyday life more convenient.
