What is a Permanent Magnet motor?
A PM motor is a motor that incorporates permanent magnets and electromagnets into the rotor. PM is an abbreviation of "Permanent Magnet", which means permanent magnet in Japanese. Therefore, it is also called permanent magnet synchronous motor. Motors are classified into AC motors with alternating current power supply and DC motors with direct current power supply, and PM motors are one type of AC motors. Furthermore, AC motors are broadly divided into induction motors that work with induced electromotive force and synchronous motors that work with magnetic attraction. A PM motor is a type of synchronous motor. A cheap and widely used motor is the induction motor. PM motors are characterized by high efficiency compared to induction motors. However, since the number of parts increases due to permanent magnets, etc., the structure is complicated and expensive. Due to the increase in carbon dioxide emissions due to the increased use of fossil fuels, the need for measures against global warming has increased, and energy conservation has become a focus of attention. As a result, there is a demand for even higher efficiency in motors that consume electricity. Against this background, the use of PM motors is being considered in a wide range of fields.
